North Korea says won't hold talks with 'incompetent' South unless differences settled

North Korea says won't hold talks with 'incompetent' South unless differences settledBy Joyce Lee and Heekyong Yang SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea's chief negotiator called the South Korean government "ignorant and incompetent" on Thursday, denounced U.S.-South Korean air combat drills and threatened to halt all talks with the South unless its demands are met. The comments by Ri Son Gwon, chairman of North Korea's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the country, were the latest in a string of inflammatory statements marking a drastic change in tone after months of easing tension with plans for denuclearisation and a summit scheduled with the United States. Ri criticized the South for participating in the drills, as well as for allowing "human scum" to speak at its National Assembly, the North's KCNA news agency said in a statement.

Venezuelan challenger Falcon aspires to vote upset

Venezuelan challenger Falcon aspires to vote upsetBy Andrew Cawthorne CARACAS (Reuters) - Striding a small stage in a poor hillside neighborhood of Venezuela's capital, Caracas, presidential aspirant Henri Falcon fulminates against hunger, malnutrition and hyperinflation under socialist rule. "It's time to tell Nicolas, the hunger candidate, 'Go away!' He is nothing but a nightmare for this country," Falcon shouts of incumbent leftist leader Nicolas Maduro, who is favored to win the OPEC nation's election on Sunday. In the most subdued election campaign in living memory, Maduro's main rival has failed to ignite the masses or bring into his fold major opposition leaders, who are boycotting the vote on grounds it is rigged.

EU vows to block blow of US Iran sanctions

EU vows to block blow of US Iran sanctionsThe EU said Thursday it will begin moves to block the effect of US sanctions on Iran as efforts to preserve the nuclear deal with Tehran deepened a transatlantic rift. The decision came as Russia and China took some of their most concrete moves yet to extend their economic influence in Iran, in the face of renewed US efforts to choke off Tehran. US President Donald Trump last week controversially pulled Washington out of the 2015 international deal with Iran that placed limits on its nuclear programme in return for easing economic sanctions.

Malaysia's Anwar says Najib likely headed to jail

Malaysia's Anwar says Najib likely headed to jailNewly released Malaysian political heavyweight Anwar Ibrahim said Thursday he expects ex-premier Najib Razak to be jailed over multi-billion-dollar graft claims. In an interview with AFP a day after he walked free from custody -- where he had languished since 2015 on what supporters say were trumped-up charges levelled at Najib's behest -- Anwar also said he would be back in parliament very soon. Anwar's release on Wednesday capped an astonishing week in Malaysian politics that saw Najib's long-ruling Barisan Nasional coalition booted from power in a revolution at the ballot box.
